Latest Researches in ObGyn
Latest developments in gynecology you didn’t know about
As gynecologists, we often get asked about most modern trends in gynecology and obstetrics — are it new birthing method or advanced treatments for chronic issues. And while there is a plethora of research and innovation in the field, it isn’t always easy for patients to make sense of it all. Which is why we’ve compiled a few key advancements you should be aware of:
Water Birthing:
Although not very admired in India, research shows that water birthing is beneficial to both the baby and the mother. A birthing pool makes for a relatively relaxed and shorter labor for the mother, especially if she’s considering a Vaginal Birth after a Cesarean (VBAC) — giving birth vaginally after having had a C-section before. The risk of a tear is also minimal, as water controls contractions and softens the vaginal tissues at the time of delivery.
Umbilical Cord Cells Preservation:
A recent study suggests that the umbilical cord blood can be used to destroy cancer cells. This is because it holds immunologically immature stem cells, posing a lower risk of transplant rejection compared to bone marrow stem cells. That’s why many parents are now opting to preserve their baby’s umbilical cord at a stem cell bank.
Fresh Vs Frozen Embryo Transfer:
Typically, in an In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) process, the transfer of fresh embryos is preferred over frozen ones. However, studies show that for women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), a frozen embryo could improve the live-birth rate and lower the chances of ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome and other difficulty. Frozen Embryo Transfer or FET also allows for a significant enlarge in conception rate as compared to fresh embryo transfer. While it’s important to keep up with the latest research and trends in gynecology, we recommend you speak with an obstetrician or gynecologist for more detailed information.
